Jesus Calms the Storm

One evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they climbed into a boat and set off across the Sea of Galilee.

Jesus was so tired from a long day of teaching that he curled up at the back of the boat, rested his head on a cushion, and fell fast asleep.

Then, without warning, a furious storm swept down over the water. The wind howled. The waves grew taller and taller, crashing over the sides of the little boat. Water began pouring in. Even the disciples — many of them experienced fishermen — were terrified.

They rushed to wake Jesus. “Master! Master!” they cried. “Don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

Jesus opened his eyes. Calmly, he stood up in the rocking boat. He looked at the wind and the roaring waves and said just three words:

“Peace. Be still.”

Instantly, the wind stopped. The waves went flat. The whole sea became perfectly calm and quiet — as if the storm had never happened at all.

The disciples sat in amazement. “Who is this?” they whispered to one another. “Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Sometimes our lives feel like that little boat in the storm — scary and out of control. But Jesus is never worried, and he is never far away. The same voice that calmed the sea can bring peace to your heart, too. You only have to call on him.
